Mauritius celebrates 15 public holidays every year. Seven of them have fixed dates while the remaining eight keep on changing every year.

The government by the guide of the laws governing the public holidays entitles the employees paid days off during public holidays. The offices, businesses, and schools are closed too.

Mauritius is made up of different religious communities including Muslims, Christians, Hindus, and Buddhist. The groups contribute to many religious holidays celebrated annually.

Buddhists are entitled to celebrate the birthday of Lord Buddha. The events are marked with lots of celebrations and festivities.

Muslims observe the holy month of Ramadan and later hold a sacred day of Eid ul-Fitr. Islamic religion uses the lunar calendar to mark the dates of their events; hence, the dates keep on changing annually.

Mauritius celebrates national Independence Day each year. This day is celebrated to commemorate the day Mauritius got their independence from the British colonization. The day is marked with celebrations full of military parades, special of patriotism, cultural dances, and songs.
